Canada’s meeting place for freelance writers and creators

Established 2010

If you've ever had trouble collecting payment from a client, this video is for you. Mike Monteiro, co-founder of Mule Design Studio gives his provocative (and sometimes profane) tips for protecting yourself as an independent contractor. His audience is a group of web designers at a San Francisco design conference, but freelancers of all stripes should take heed when negotiating assignments.

His advice boils down to two things: 1) Establish clear expectations, explicitly stated and agreed to by both parties in a contract, and 2) have confidence if yourself to negotiate from a position of strength.

Here are some other highlights:

  • Don't start work without a contract (otherwise you lose any negotiating leverage you had).
  • Don't blindly accept the client's terms.
  • Anticipate negotiation, but don't back down on important stuff. This includes: intellectual property rights (any rights you're selling are yours until they pay you for them); kill fees; and liability.
  • Be confident when speaking about money. Know your rate, and ask for it.
  • And if expectations aren't clear or compensation isn't sufficient, don't be afraid to walk away.
Another good piece of advice: if you encounter rough waters with a client, don't try to patch things up over e-mail. Pick up a telephone and sort it out.

A fellow freelancer forwarded me a Craigslist ad the other day. I thought it might be for a pair of skis or that used barbeque I've been meaning to get. But it wasn't. It was a publisher on the hunt for a freelance editor. Compensation to be decided based on the submitted quote, it said. I quickly deleted it, but then I got to wondering: Is this…

Well, okay, Tim Knight wasn't on The National. At least not lately. But Knight—who wrote, reported for, and produced the show in the '70s—has a lot to say about its current state, and he wrote about it for J-Source. Well, this is something. In a post on HuffPo Canada, freelance writer Bob Beaty discusses the value of freelance content sites and asks writers to weigh in on them too. The conclusion of the article, in brief, is that while writers are severely underpaid by these sites and are dissuaded from putting any personality into their work to keep it…

The Toronto Star has been issuing new agreements to its freelancers that contain broader language than previous ones. According to some freelancers we heard from, there was less pressure to sign and return the contracts when they were first distributed, but after questions were raised about its wording, a hard deadline was set. There are a few…
